Abstract
Deep-sea manganese nodules which have been found on the seafloor contain many kinds of metals such as manganese, copper and rare-earth elements as well. A pilot miner system which is designed for collecting manganese nodules consists of three subsystems, a collector, a crawler and a chassis structure. It collects manganese nodules while traveling on cohesive soft soil of deep-sea floor about 5,000 meters depth. There are a variety of design requirements related to mining systems. Hence the pilot miner system cannot be designed with an objective of a single part only. Meanwhile, because a pilot miner is operated in inaccessible area where people had no interests in the past, the environment is unknown or unexpected. Thus, data of the deep-sea environment exist in discrete form through exploration for ten years. These discrete data should be considered and estimated in design phase. In this paper, uncertainty-based multidisciplinary design optimization of a pilot miner system, which is able to consider each subsystems and discrete data of deep-sea environment, is performed.
