Abstract
Mid-term Clinical Outcome of Endovascular Coil Embolization for Ruptured Cerebral Aneurysms in Elderly Patients In-Seok Bae , Hyeong-Joong Yi , Kyu-Sun Choi , Yong Ko , Hyoung-Joon Chun Department of Neurosurgery, Hanyang University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea Abstract Objective The object of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome and complications after endovascular coil embolization of ruptured intracranial aneurysm in elderly patients. Methods Retrospective review was performed in 98 patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) who underwent endovascular coil embolization during the period from May 2008 to January 2013. Patients aged 65 years or older were assigned to Group A, while those patients aged under 65 years were assigned to Group B. We analyzed following factors between two groups; (1) age, (2) sex, (3) initial Hunt & Hess grade, (4) initial Fisher grade, (5) location of the aneurysm, (6) complications, and (7) modified Rankin Scale. Results Of two groups, procedure-related complications did not differ significantly. Also, incidence of vasospasm did not differ significantly between two groups. Only the incidence of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus was significantly higher in elderly patients. Finally, clinical outcome after endovascular coil embolization in elderly patients was favorable. Conclusion Advanced technique of endovascular coil embolization in nowadays, elderly patients with ruptured aneurysmal SAH can be treated with endovascular coil embolization with favorable outcome.
