- Abstract
- The research explored leisure experiences of North Korean Refugee College Students(NK students) in perspective with leisure socialization. The phenomenological approach is taken, and face-to-face in-depth interviews with semi-structured questionnaires were carried out among seven NK students. Results explained that those students experience different leisure socialization process from South Korean College students. That was because unwanted gap years for learning and their stressful escape from North Korea made their leisure experience monotonous. Interview results were analyzed into two part: socialization into and through leisure. Family members were not quite influential agents but significant others around NK students; Korean students chose leisure activities for self-development, whereas NK students did for adaptation in South Korea. They created social relationships and changed their former dialect, life style, and even stereotypes through leisure experience; also they felt comfort and sympathy psychologically during leisure. In conclusion, NK students’ leisure experiences have an important role as a kind of socialization vehicle.
