- Abstract
- Commute pattern can be significantly affected by changes in urban form characteristics associated with residential and employment locations. This study aims to identify how the changes in urban form characteristics affect individual commute pattern, and suggest an effective urban form policy for the efficient commute pattern in Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). To do so, this study investigates the differences of urban form characteristics among 65 cities and gu(s) in SMA, and then examines the effect of urban form characteristics on the commute pattern.
The results show that workers who commute to downtown Seoul and Southeastern Seoul have significantly increased for the past 10 years. In addition, jobs-housing imbalance has become higher, and commute distance has become longer in many cities with high employment density and in some cities with low employment density. It is also found that inflow rate of commuters and their commute distances have substantially increased in northwestern and southern areas in SMA for the past 10 years. To relieve the problem associated with urban commuting pattern, it is suggested that the quaternary sector of the economy (knowledge-based industry) in cities with high employment density is needed to be decentralized to other cities, and ‘decentralized concentration development’ should be implemented.
