- Abstract
- 본 논문은 말러의 음악이 동시대 다른 독일어권 작곡가들의 음악과 왜 다를까라는 질문에서 시작하였다. 이 질문은 평범하고 진부해 보이지만 음악적 내용만 가지고는 설명되기 어려운 주제이므로 19세기 독일문화사의 맥락 안에서 그의 음악의 본질에 접근해 보았다. 보헤미아 출신의 유대인으로서, 세기말(fin du siècle) 빈의 지휘자이며 작곡가로서 그가 경험한 경계인의 삶을 조명하고, 그가 경외했던 니체, 바그너, 괴테의 사고와 상호연관 시켜봄으로써 그의 음악적 본질을 니체와 괴테의 몸학(Physiologie) 혹은 신체성과 결부시켰다. 말러의 작품에 나타나는 진보적인 사고, 즉 여성성, 아이러니, 단편기법(fragmentary style) 등으로 나타나는 특징을 탈 형이상학적(post-metaphysic) 신체성의 발로로 해석하였다.
