Abstract
The NH4+ exchange characteristics of natural and Mg-modified zeolite were investigated to remove NH4+-N. Exchange capacity was increased according to the particle size of natural zeolite comes to be small. Batch isotherm experiments were conducted for measuring NH4+-N ion exchange capacity. The ion exchange capacity was described by the Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm, pseudo first-order kinetic equation and pseudo second-order kinetic equation. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fit to the equilibrium data and NH4+-N adsorption on natural zeolite sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm. However, Mg-modified zeolite sorbent were follow Freundlich isotherm. The simple kinetic model, the pseudo first order kinetic model and the pseudo second order kinetic model, were used to investigate the adsorption. The adsorption reaction of NH4+-N followed the pseudo second order kinetic model. Pathogenic microorganism adsorption by Mg-modified zeolite were increased about 0.09 mg/g compared with natural zeolite.
