말러의 말년의 양식 : 교향곡 제9번 스케르초 악장을 중심으로

Abstract

말러의 교향곡 제9번은 그 기이한 형식뿐만 아니라 그가 완성한 마지막 작품이기 때문에 학자들의 논쟁이 끊이지 않는 작품이다. 대부분의 학자들은 이 작품이 말러의 죽음에 임박한 상황과 연관이 있다고 보았다. 그러나 말러의 전기작가인 라 그랑쥬는 그가 이 작품을 작곡할 때 건강에 별 이상이 없었던 사실을밝히며 이러한 의견에 반박한다. 그랑쥬는 말러 9번 교향곡의 형식과 양식을 아도르노가 「베토벤의 후기 양식」에서 이야기한 ‘말년의 양식’과 연관 지어 설명한다. 본 논문은 수수께끼와 같은 형식과 양식, 그리고 관습적이지 않은 토픽을 사용하는 9번 교향곡의 스케르초 악장을 분석하였다. 분석을 통하여 이 악장을 낯설고, 공격적이고, 아이러니하게 만드는 요소가 무엇인지를 살펴보고, 렌들러와왈츠에 나타나는 토픽의 전형 허물기, 낯설게 하기, 원형 손상시키기 등을 가지고 말러의 말년의 양식을 설명하였다.

Mahler's Ninth Symphony has been frequently discussed by many scholars not only because it has problematic forms and styles but also because it is his last completed work. A majority of them related the work to the situation of composer's impending death. However, Mahler's biographer, La Grange refuted against the opinion revealing Mahler had been a fairly good condition in composing the Ninth. He explained the forms and styles of the Ninth in relation to the ‘last style’ discussed by Adorno in his Sp¨atstil Beethovens. The Study is focused on the Scherzo of the Ninth because of its enigmatic form, style, and the unconventional usage of topics. At first,Adorno's late style was examined along with Said's On Late Style. Through analyzing the Scherzo, I discussed what makes the movement so strange,aggressive, and ironic, and explained the late style of Mahler with examining the topical dissonances of L¨andler and waltz, and the defamiliarization, uglification, and negativity produced by Mahler's masterly motivic and thematic manipulation.
