- Abstract
- Nanoscale zero-valent iron(NZVI) has recently received much attention for remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene(TCE). The primary purpose of the study is to evaluate and cpmpare between chemical treatment of NZVI and bioaugmentation of anaerobic dechlorinating bacteria for trichloroethylene degradation. NZVI were synthesized by a sodium borohydride reduction method and characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD), and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). Anaerobic bacterial culture of Geobacter lovleyi capable of dechlorinating PCE to cis-DCE was used for the biological treatment. As a result, TCE degradation efficiencies in Geobacter lovleyi with NZVI were more improved than those in only use of NZVI. These indicated that the synergy effect of combining chemical and biological treatment on TCE degradation.
