- Abstract
- This article points out several problems of Mandarin textbooks published in Korea in the recent decades. There are hundreds of Mandarin textbooks available to all sorts of Korean learners beginning from preschoolers to adults now. Unfortunately, however, they tend to have the following problems in common:
(1) a. Often compiled by non-specialists.
b. Insufficient characteristics in contents and format.
c. No theoretical backgrounds and framework
d. Only the textbook of the beginning level is available. No textbooks of the same series for intermediate and advanced students.
e. Inconsistency in contents and format in case of co-authors
f. Unrealistic plot and setting. Koreans are often neglected in case of translation.
Considering the above problems, this article proposes the following conditions for a desirable Mandarin textbook for the speakers of Korean by taking an example of Hanyang Chinese 1, which was published by Hanyang University Press in 2009:
(2) a. Fulfill the target of students and goals of teaching. It should be written by specialists.
b. Interesting and attractive contents with one’s own characteristics
c. Employ new theories in L2 teaching and learning.
d. A full set from beginning level to advanced level
e. Consistent and systematic throughout the whole levels
f. Real expressions in realistic plots and setting
