Abstract
The city of Seoul is a typical of the complex of metro-police in the third world. It involves various contradictions from feudalism to capitalism. The space of Seoul varies its socio-cultural topology with the changes of the times. I studied the aspects of representations through the three novels- Poeui-gyo-Jip(The Story of a Commoner's Acquaintances with a Lady), Cheonbyun-punggyeong(The Scenery of the Cheonggye- Streamside), Seoul-1964-Winter. There are four kinds of spaces-the space as object, the space as a body, the space as a text, the space as a ideal. Korean madang is the complex of place which four spaces is in harmony with subject as a inter-being dynamically. I applied the theory of madang in analyzing the socio-cultural space of the city of Seoul and its representations. In the text of Poeui-gyo-Jip, Seoul is the field where a commoner and a lady loves each other freely. However, the country is the field where a commoner subordinates to feudal system and ethic order. In the text of Cheonbyun-punggyeong, Seoul is divided into two territories. Cheonbyun is the field where the people of the cheonggye streamside are born poor but live with commune solidarity. However, Kwancheol-dong is the field where the peoples are born rich but live in saloons and brothel. In the text of Seoul-1964-Winter, Seoul is the field where all the peoples are solitary and isolated from all the others. Since nobody in that space talks to others and takes interests in neighbor, they feel alienated. There are two fields in the city of Seoul. One is the place which the capitalist power occupies and rules. The other is the place which the citizen holds in common. The more the power elites occupy a space, the more the citizen struggle against it, and the nearer the center approaches to de-construction.
