Abstract
This article addresses the strong need for providing physical activity programs to persons with mental illness. Research on the effects of physical activity on the physical and mental health of persons with mental illness has recently begun. Individuals with mental illness are also at high risk of various physical diseases. The effects of physical activity on physical health are large and consistent across multiple studies. Also, strong evidence for the therapeutic benefits of exercise for mental illness comes from recent studies. It was shown that the effects of exercise were similar to those of psychological counseling and therapy. Exercise can also be effective in alleviating problems such as low self-esteem and social isolation of mentally ill people. The fact that exercise is well accepted and favored by people with mental illness is promising. Therefore, it can be concluded that physical activity programs for individuals with mental illness should be integrated into mental health services. By integrating physical activity programs into mental health services, mental health service providers can greatly improve their therapeutic effectiveness for treating people with mental illness.
