- Abstract
- Infectious diseases spread more widely among athletes. This study was conducted to describe the epidemiologic characteristics of mumps outbreak in a physical education high school. We surveyed 356 students on March, 2004 and collected by using questionnaires. The mean age of subjects was 17.0 years. Seventy-one percent of them were boys. Forty-two persons were verified as patients(incidence rate, 11.8%). In terms of risk of mumps, badminton, gymnastics, and wrestling were three sports with the highest risk in descending order. Past and recent mumps vaccinations were not protective. Camp training out of the town was a protective factor. Majority of the students recognized the importance of rest and isolation during the mumps outbreak. Mumps may spread more widely among athletes because they live together and some sports increase the opportunity to contact with each other. Early detection and isolation of the index patient are required to control the communicable diseases among athletes.
