- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of various stitches of plain, rib 0:0, 1:1, 2:2, full cardigan (FC) 0:0, 1:1, 2:2, half cardigan (HC) 0:0, 1:1, 2:2, milano rib, half milano rib on the mechanical and hand properties of the knitted cotton fabrics. The scoured and undyed 100% cotton yarn (2/30's) were weft-knitted from 13 different stitches with 12 machine gauge using a V-bed knitting machine. The mechanical properties (tensile, bending, shearing, compression, surface, and thickness & weight) of fabrics, hand value (HV) and total hand value (THV) were measured and calculated by the KES-FB system, Kawabata evalution system for fabric. The results are as follows: rib1:1, 2:2, 4:4 presented the lowervalues in tensile properties, rib4:4, FC2:2 and HC2:2 knits showed higher values in bending properties, rib4:4 was lowest and milano was highest in shear property values. FC1:1 was superior in compression properties. FC0:0 showed the most surface roughness in course direction. FC2:2 was the most thick and heavy. Milano rib had the highest HV in stiffness, and FC2:2 gave the highest HVs in smoothness, fullness & softness characteristics. Rib 4:4 presented highest THV. Knitting stitches and structure affects the mechanical and hand properties.
