- Abstract
- We investigated a vertical alignment method of liquid crystals (LCs) by using self-assembled monolayers (SAM) prepared on an anisotropic surface, which was produced by oblique ion beam irradiations or by a mechanical rubbing. The LC alignment effects, depending on the alkyl chain length of the SAMs as well as the surface anisotropic conditions, were checked. By using the methods, multi-domain VA alignment effects were also observed.
