- Abstract
- Objectives: We evaluated the extent to which middle school students in Korea are judged by a parent or care giver to be behaviourally affected by dental anxiety and the factors associated with this.
Methods: The data were collected from 20 March, 2009 to 19 April 2009. The information was gathered by self-completed questionnaire distributed to middle school students in Gunpo City of Gyeonggi Province. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 to determine the prevalence of dental anxiety and fears and identify factors affecting the use of dental services.
Results: Most(74%) students had used preventive dental services provided by dental facilities. Dental anxiety and dental fear do not affect appointment attendance. The effects of dental pain and anxiety on utilization measures, although significant in several analyses, were generally weak. Thus, many dental anxiety patients receive dental treatment despite high fear levels.
Conclusions: Whilst these findings do not necessarily indicate causal relationships, they do confirm a number of co-factors associated with dental anxiety perhaps most importantly that of anxiety of general anaesthesia for tooth extractions.
