- Abstract
- The purpose of this paper is to examine the development of personal narrative in young children. Subjects chosen for this study were four children of 24 to 35 months. The results of this research as follows. First, personal narratives for children under three were made possible only in the context of their interaction with adults. At this stage, the children were found to be unable to introduce and maintain past events into their narratives by themselves. Second, these children created narratives consisting of single utterances. Whether voluntary or involuntary, narratives consisting of a series of multiple connected utterances were found only later than this stage. The involuntary series of utterances was made under the guidance of adults in the form of narrative statement according to temporal linearity. Also in the involuntary series of utterances, increasing specification was found in terms of filling in or adding more details found lacking in the prior utterances. At a more developed level, a series of actions in the process of an event was found to be arranged in a row when uttered. Finally, a series of actions and the internal states corresponding to those actions were found in the utterances of the children under three. However, only one of them was able to perform the series, and the internal state was described only in terms of stating his feelings.
