- Abstract
- Rhetoric had a great influence in Baroque era. Dances and Music were not exceptions. Until recently, however, scholars who have studied the musical rhetoric focused exclusively on the relationship between texts and music. Naturally, only the role of elocutio has been emphasized among sub-disciplines of rhetoric. Other sub-disciplines, such as 'inventio' and 'dispositio' also are very important to understand the influence of rhetoric on Baroque dance and music. These sub-disciplines also provide an useful frame of reference to compare the Bourée during the reign of Louis XIV and the one that has been stylized during the 18th-century. In this study, the author compares the 'Bourée d'Achille' and J. S. Bach's Bourée I' from <English Suite> from the rhetorical view.
