1인 가구의 범죄피해-두려움 패러독스(victimization-fear paradox)

Abstract

본 연구는 만 18세 이상의 성인을 대상으로 1인 가구 여부와 동거가족 수가 범죄 두려움에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 실증적 분석을 위해 「2014 한국종합사회조사」 자료를 사용하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면 여성 응답자의 경우, 다인가구원일수록, 그리고 동거가족 수가 더 많을수록 범죄에 대한 두려움을 더 크게 느끼는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 남성응답자의 경우에는 1인 가구 여부와 동거가족 수가 범죄 두려움에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 1인 가구원이 실제로 범죄피해를 더 많이 당함에도 불구하고 범죄 두려움을 더 적게 느낀다는 점에서, 이러한 결과는 1인 가구원의 범죄피해-두려움 패러독스(victimization-fear paradox) 현상을 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 역설적 상황의 성별 차이를 설명하기 위해 두려움의 전염 가능성과 모성 이데올로기의 역할 등을 추가적으로 논의하였으며, 연구 결과와 관련된 정책적제언을 제시하였다.

This study examined the effect of the household size on the household member’s fear of crime among the adult Korean population. We used 2014 Korean General Social Survey data for the analyses. For females, the fear of crime was positively associated with the household size. Such a pattern was not found for males. Given that the members of single-person households reported the lowest level of the fear of crime in spite of the highest possibility of crime victimization, our findings revealed the victimization-fear paradox related with the household size. To explain the paradoxical phenomenon, we suggested a possibility of the contagion of fear and an influence of maternity ideology.
