Abstract
This study set out to investigate Han Mu-suk's short stories, which described the reality after the Korean War with pathological symptoms by introducing the oppression of women's sex and love and consistently challenged reality and took up those challenges. There are several works in her collection that depict the trauma of separation and detachment after war through women's degenerative fixation; The Stone shows Yeong-ran's guilty consciousness, The Shade Seon-hee's self-torture, and Myeong-oki a lady who fixated her obsessed past with idealized present. As their pathological symptoms works as the strength to overcome the times, ego is isolated and the pathological nature of reality is highlighted. In The Venue of Festivals and Fate, war experiences and the following reality of disillusions are manifested through the hospital metaphorically. A lung cancer patient Jeon Ok-hee also suffers narcissist neurosis and reflects on her past looking at Mi-yeon, who looks like her young self. In the process, helpless and desolated reality after war is clearly presented. In The Depth with Feelings, the author describes the suppressed society with wide spread anxiety and illusion due to anti-communism ideology after the division of two Koreas as a psychic ward in a metaphorical way. Anxiety after war is transferred to Jeon-a's sexual oppression. The write ironically tells that the society considered to be normal is disrupted by projecting Jeon-a's life in the psychic ward. Han presented women's overturning voice through pathological symptoms by transferring the dismal times to the oppression of women's sex and love. Examining the problems with reality through the pathological symptoms from her novels claims significance in that it can open a new chapter for newly establishing hierarchy among female writers' works whose value has been denied.
