Abstract
Now is the time of re-orientation. In other words, we have to find new answers to the old question of what history is. This is because we have tasted two extreme cases: the modern history as well as the postmodern history. As a result, we are in a rather awkward situation where the positive as well as the negative effect are easily noticed. If we look on the bright side, we are witnessing the widening horizon of historical studies, as the new trends such as microhistory, new cultural history came into the domain of history. But if we look on the dark side, we are also observing the full bloom of the various pseudo-histories. As a consequence, in a current situation, we have to ‘protect’ the core of history in order to truly ‘widen’ the territory of historical studies. To achieve this aim, in this article, R.G. Collingwood’s scale of forms of history will be thoroughly examined. By articulating the main characteristics of the so-called dogmatic, critical and constructive history, we can acknowledge the differences between history and pseudo-history, and thereby, we can firmly grasp the specific features which make history as history. For this, Collingwood’s published works as well as his unpublished manuscripts kept in the Bodleian Library will be exhaustively investigated.
