프레드릭 제임슨의 포스트모던론 연구

Abstract

포스트모더니즘에 관한 한, 프레드릭 제임슨의 영향력은 결코 무시될 수 없다. 마치 E.H. 카아의 말, 곧 “현재와 과거의 대화”가 역사란 무엇인가의 정답으로 종종 인용되듯이, “포스트모더니즘은 후기 자본주의의 문화 논리”라는 제임슨의 명제는 포스트모더니즘에 대한 궁극적인 해답으로 즐겨 인용된다. 그러나 후기 자본주의란 무엇인가. 문화 논리란 또 무엇인가. 그리고 왜 제임슨은 이러한 명제를 주장했으며, 어떤 과정을 거쳐 이러한 결론에 도달했을까. 본 논문의 목적은 단일하다. 포스트모더니즘에 대한 제임슨의 다양한 글들을 심층적으로 분석함으로써, 그의 포스트모더니즘 이론에 대한 “지도”를 그려내려는 것이다. 이를 위해 우선 제임슨의 “인식적 지도 그리기”개념의 의미와 중요성 등이 탐구될 것이며, 제임슨의 양의적인 포스트모더니즘 개념이 중점적으로 고구될 것이다. 그리하여 인식적 지도그리기란 주체적 인간과 객관적 상황의 다양한 연관양상을 통해 특정한 시대의 굴곡과 부침(浮沈)을 세부적으로 잡아냄으로써, 그 시대의 (인식 불가능해 보이는) 윤곽과 지형을 총체적으로 드러내는 작업임이 입증될 것이다. 아울러 제임슨의 포스트모더니즘이란 후기 자본주의가 토대로서 확고히 자리 잡은 시대를 지칭하는 개념이면서, 동시에 후기 자본주의라는 물적 환경에 의해 조건 지워진 사회의 전반적인 모습을 총체적으로 규정하는 개념이기도 한 것임이 증명될 것이다. 이어 패스티쉬와 노스탤지어 등의 개념에 대한 고찰을 통해, 제임슨이 생각한 포스트모던 시대의 주된 특징이 무엇인지가 구체적으로 논의될 것이다. 그리고 다국적 자본의 전 지구적 침식으로 인해 생겨난 문제점들을 그가 어떻게 해결하고자 시도했는지가 구명될 것이며, 끝으로 제임슨의 포스트모더니즘 이론의 단점과 장점 등이 고찰될 것이다.

Needless to say, Fredric Jameson is one of the most important thinkers on today's postmodernism. The main purpose of this article is to thoroughly expound the main characteristics of Fredric Jameson's concept of postmodernism. In other words, critically articulating the peculiarities, the limitations and the significance of Jameson's postmodernism is the main theme. For this, by examining his various works on postmodernism as well as films such as The Cultural Turn, Postmodernism, Signatures of the Visible, The Geopolitical Aesthetic, his attempt for 'cognitive mapping' of postmodernism will be deeply analyzed and criticized. And, as a result, the arguments revolving on his usage of postmodernism as a periodization concept and a cultural logic of the late capitalism, his characterization of the postmodern age as the world of pastiche, and his longings for genuine culture which can resist the logic of capital will be suggested as a conclusion.
