Abstract
This study addressed the therapeutic effects of exercise interventions on mental disorders such as substance abuse, eating and anxiety disorders, The psychologically therapeutic effects of exercise and physical activity were large and consistent across various mental disorders. It was shown that the effects of exercise were similar to those of psychological therapy as well as pharmacotherapy. Strong evidence for the therapeutic benefits of exercise for various mental disorders was presented. However, There is little research on the mechanisms by which exercise has its positive effects on mental health. Studies on the mechanisms of the psychologically therapeutic effects of exercise have recently received attention. In this study, physiological and psychological factors were presented and discussed as mediators that could intervene the relationship between exercise and mental health. The key to success is that exercise interventions should be developed considering individual specificity of the participants in the programs. Exercise can be used as an adjunctive treatment for various mental disorders. Therefore, it can be concluded that physical activity programs for individuals with mental disorders should be integrated into mental health services. By integrating physical activity and exercise programs into mental health services, mental health service providers can greatly improve their therapeutic effectiveness for treating people with mental disorders.
