Abstract
Various environmental problems in Korea occur as a result of concentrations of urban development. Cumulative impacts of urban development projects in particular are responsible for serious environmental deterioration that in turn negatively affects the quality of life. Because cumulative impacts of urban developments accumulate in space as well as in time they need to be understood through comprehensive and systematic methods. This study, therefore, attempts to determine the nature of cumulative impacts in the urban environment and to establish a framework for assessment. The process of this study consisted of the following: First, definitions and characteristics of cumulative impacts were defined. Secondly, factors of cumulative impacts were identified. Thirdly, an assessment framework of cumulative impacts was established and detailed assessment methods were then developed in regards to atmospheric, aquatic, and ecological environments. The results in this study can be utilized as an important logical basis in the preparation of policies on urban planning and management.
