Abstract
Lithium Ion batteries have emerged as an efficient way of storing energy. Though the technology has not yet reached its pinnacle of performance, research and development will soon reveal its potential use especially in the field of hybrid and electric vehicles. The diversity of the chemical nature of the materials studied requires an overall comprehension for the future development of this technology. This review addresses most of the issues on the lithium ion batteries including the different types of materials used as anode and cathode, their electrochemical performances and their thermal characterization. Based on some of the results a possible reaction pathway for thermal runaway has been proposed.
