『세종실록지리지』 해도 기술 원칙과 우산·무릉도 기사의 재검토

Abstract

본고는 세종실록지리지를 대상으로, 해도(海島) 기술의 양상 및 인식의문제를 다루고자 한다. 오늘날 세종실록지리지에 기재된 우산·무릉 두섬에 대한 기사는 한국의 독도영유권 주장에서 매우 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 그러나 해당 기사 내용을 둘러싼 비판과 반론만이 중요하게 이루어져 왔다. 정작 세종실록지리지 전체의 맥락에서 해도는 어떻게 기술되어 있고, 또 어떠한 해도들이 수록되었는가의 문제는 심각하게 고려된 바가 없었던 것이다. 『세종실록지리지』에서는 어떠한 섬을, 어떠한 방식으로 기재하고 있는가의 문제를 먼저 파악한 이후 해당 맥락에서 우산·무릉 두 섬에 대한 기재 내용을 확인할 때, 당대의 시각에서 우산·무릉도가 어떠한 의미인지를 명확하게 확인할 수 있으리라 생각한다. 아울러 이러한 작업은 비단 우산·무릉도 기사 내용의 검토뿐 아니라, 조선 전기 시기 해양 및 섬에 대한 인식이란 보다 광범위한 주제에 대해서도 일정한 시사점을 던져 줄 수 있으리라 기대한다.

This study intends to address the perception of sea islands in the descriptions of The Annals of King Sejong. The records about the two islands, Wusando and Mureungdo, in Sejongsillok jiriji are the most important part in Korea’s sovereignty claim over Dokdo. However, criticism of and counterarguments against the contents of the applicable articles have been made. Subjects about how sea islands were described from the viewpoint of Sejongsillok jiriji and which islands were included in the book have not been studied thoroughly. How and which islands are described in the book should first be understood and the meanings of Wusando and Mureungdo in the applicable context should be reviewed in the perspective of the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, this study is expected to give some implications to a wide variety of subjects, such as the perception of the ocean and islands in the early Joseon Dynasty, and the descriptions of Wusando and Mureungdo.
