이간의 이기동실‧심성일치론과 임성주의 비판

Abstract

이간은 미발일 때 심체가 순선하다고 여겼다. 그의 관점에서 보면, 선한 본성에 근거해서 인간의 고귀함을 확보하는 것은 원리의 수준이지 실사(實事)가 아니다. 이 지점에서 등장하는 것이 이기동실·심성일치이다. 이 원칙을 근거로 이간은 미발일 때 심·기가 순선해지고 그 안의 성·리도 온전히 드러난다는 미발심체순선론을 역설했다. 그러나 그의 미발론은 기와 상관없이 리의 보편성이 모든 사물에 관철되어 있다는 점에 주목한 인물성동론과 어긋난다는 문제가 있다. 이 어긋남을 정확하게 간파한 사람이 임성주이다. 이간이 미발론을 통해 인간의 심·기가 성·리의 순선을 온전하게 구현해내는 심성일치의 경지를 염두에 두었다면, 임성주는 기와 리, 심과 성이 언제나 일치해 있는 상태라는 것에 주목해, 그 상태를 이기동실·심성일치로 규정했다는 특징이 있다. 요컨대 임성주는 현실적으로 기와 리, 심과 성의 어긋남을 용인하지 않았고, 따라서 선한 본성은 반드시 담일청허(湛一淸虛)의 기와 통일되어 있다고 여겼다. 다만 대개의 경우 그 기가 사재(渣滓)에 가려져 드러나지 않을 뿐이다. 결국 이간의 이기동실·심성일치는 기의 본연을 회복함으로써 리의 순선을 드러내는 것이 관건인 반면에, 임성주의 그것은 사재를 뚫고 담일의 기를 드러내는 것이 관건이다. 담일의 기가 드러난다는 것은 그 기와 통일되어 있는 순선한 리가 구현된다는 것을 함의하기 때문이다. 이는 이간이 제시한 이기동실·심성일치의 철저화이자 낙학의 인물성론과 미발론 사이에 노정된 어긋남을 해결하려는 문제의식의 산물이라고 평가할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify Lee Gan(李柬)’s thesis of ‘the unity of principle and vital force(理氣同實)’ and ‘the coincidence of mind and nature(心性一致)’, and examine Im Seong-ju’s criticism on it. Discussing the non-issuance state of the mind, Lee Gan emphasized the thesis of ‘the unity of principle and vital force’ and ‘the coincidence of mind and nature’, which implies that the human nature(or principle) will be good actually only if human mind(or vital force) becomes good. At the same time he separated principle from vital force and pointed it in domain of comparing human nature and things’ nature. It means that the thesis of the unity of principle and vital force has not been applied consistently in the two realm. Im Seong-ju(任聖周), penetrating the dislocation found in Lee’s theory, criticised him for being out of touch with the ultimate source and insisted that thesis of ‘the unity of principle and vital force’ and ‘the coincidence of mind and nature’ is a real law working consistently anywhere in this world.
