Abstract
Purpose : Interviews between the coordinator and the family of the brain dead for organ and tissue donation have a great impact on the increase in the consent rate of organ donation. It is necessary to find out empirically the factors for building a mutually respectful and reciprocal relationship in the interview between the coordinator and the family from the perspective of the research subject. Methods : This study is a qualitative study, and data were collected through in-depth interviews with 10 coordinators of the Korea Organ Donation Agency. The collected data were analyzed by two steps of text analysis and meaning reconstruction. Results : The relationship building factors between the coordinator and the family of the brain dead analyzed in this study include ‘establishing trust, helping the family, empathy, active listening, friendliness, non-burdening, cautious approach, and sincerity’. Coordinators conducted interviews to deliver information to the family of the brain dead, sincerely and carefully through sympathy and listening, while working for the family at the same time. In these interviews, non-verbal and quasi-verbal communication as well as verbal expressions was actively used. Conclusion : The results of this study can be used for communication training of organ procurement coordinators.
