글로벌 팬데믹 하 물질문화로서 LP 구매 및 수집에 대한 비판적 문화연구

Abstract

이 연구는 코로나 팬데믹에 따른 LP수집 열풍을 LP 전문가 인터뷰와 현장 관찰, 기존 문헌연구, LP관련 공중파 다큐멘터리와 유튜브, 네이버 카페, 중고나라 등에 대한 텍스트 분석을 통해 다층적이고 심도 있게 분석하고자 하였다. 이에 대한 이론적 고찰로 대중문화 연구의 문맥에서 기 드보르의 스펙터클 사회와 소스타인 베블렌의 과시적 소비, 피에르 부르디외의 계급문화와 취향에 대한 논의를 이론적, 개념적 틀거리와 근거로 삼아 정치, 경제, 사회적 맥락에서 면밀하면서도 연계적으로 살펴보고자 하였다. 질적 인터뷰와 텍스트 분석 결과, 현재의 LP 수집가들에게 LP란 언제라도 거래할 수 있는 환금성을 갖춘 화폐나 주식과 같은 재화이자 매력적인 상품임을 확인할 수 있었다. 더불어 더 이상 공급이 없는 고가의 희귀 LP판들은 그들의 생계수단이자 타인에게 언제라도 과시할 수 있는 구별 짓기의 미디어로 기능했다. 또한, LP 음악 듣기와 수집을 둘러싸고 긍정적인 효과(세대 벽허물기와 감성, 복고, 유행 문화)와 부정적인 효과(거품, 비용, 불편)로 구분되어 LP 관련 담론들은 재점화되고 있었다. 이러한 양가적 가치들의 충돌과 조우는 현재 삶에 대한 피로와 긴장, 불안감 등으로 인해 ‘상상된’ 과거의 좋은 시절로 돌아가고자 하는 회귀 현상으로 이해할 수 있다. 동시에 이러한 LP 수집현상을 사회적 안전망에서 배제된 비정상적인 청년세대의 유별난 취미나 일탈 등으로 오인하거나 단순화할 수 있는 가능성도 상존한다. 이는 하나의 물질문화로서 청년세대의 LP수집 현상과 그에 수반되는 다양한 사회적 문제들과 부작용을 과도하게 개인화하거나 세대 담론으로 환원론적으로 치환하기에 우리 사회의 구조화한 경제적, 사회적 문제들이 무겁게 존재하는 이유에서다.

In this study, the LP collection phenomenon under the global pandemic was analyzed, utilizing in-depth interviews with 7 LP experts, field observations, literature reviews, textual analysis on LP-related documentaries such as YouTube, Naver Cafe, Korean second-handed market, and the like. For theoretical consideration, Guy E. Debord's spectacle society, Thorstein B. Veblen's conspicuous consumption, Pierre Bourdieu's discussion of class culture and taste in the context of popular culture studies were used. As the result of the qualitative interviews and textual analysis, we found that the collection of long-playing record is an attractive source of extra income, like stock, that could be traded at any time for LP collectors. In addition, expensive LP with scarcity were their means of livelihood. Also it was something to show off to others at any time. There were also reasons listening to LP music, and it was roughly divided into two aspects, for instance, positive effects (breaking down generational gap, retro, yet trendy culture) and negative effects (extravagance, cost, inconvenience). The collision and close encounter of these ambivalent values could be understood as nostalgia for the past due to a considerable level of anxiety in everyday life they experience. At the same time, there is always a possibility that this overly obsessive LP collection activities could be mistaken for or simplified as the unusual hobbies or deviations of the abnormal youth generation excluded from the social safety net. We argue that the phenomenon of the young generation's LP collection and its negative side effects may not merely be personalized or reduced to the generational discourse. The underlying reason for this lies in the structured economic and social problems of our society.
