Abstract
Hyenyeong Chung and Yunju Nam, 2020. ERP study on the time course of Korean speech act recognition. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 45-2, 373-400. In this research, we tried to investigate the time course of the recognition of the underspecified utterance in Korean, which can act as a direct speech or indirect speech depending on the preceding utterance. Specifically, it was aimed to explore whether the real speech act can be recognized in the early time of the utterance of the head-final language, as confirmed by several studies based on the SVO languages. For this, we conducted ERP experiments, including the four conditions where the same utterance can act as an answer, a declination, a pre-offer speech act, or an unrelated utterance depending on the preceded utterance. The results are summarized as follows: in the declination condition compared to the answering condition, N400 reflecting the difficulty of the pragmatic processing was elicited from the first region(subject + adverb region). In contrast, in the unrelated condition, N400 was obtained from the second region (object region). Besides, no significant difference between the answering and the pre-offer condition. Conclusively, we confirmed that the speech act could be recognized even with the partial cues, as recently suggested by the parallel models of the speech act, and ultimately the pragmatic processing occurs before comprehending the literal meaning. Or even it could be considered that the speech act of the following utterance included in the minimal pair could be anticipated based on the preceding utterance.(Konkuk University)
