- Abstract
- In this study, we proposed a dedicated outdoor air system assisted by membrane dehumidification and evaporative cooling and fabricated the system in a test-bed building. To evaluate the energy and thermal performance, the prototypewas experimentally analyzed for the typical summer. The proposed system is thermally-decoupled and consists of a membrane-based dehumidification (MD) unit for dealing with humidity and an indirect evaporative cooling (IEC) system for controlling the supply air temperature. The experimental results indicated that the dehumidification rate of the
membrane-based dehumidification unit was 585 g/h and the sensible cooling capacity of the indirect evaporative cooling was 500 W with free-cooling. In typical summer operations, the proposed system saved 40% of operation load compared to a vapor-compression cycle-based air conditioning system. Although the proposed system use free-cooling of the indirect evaporative cooling, its system coefficient of performance (COP) of the prototype was 0.8, which is 24.5% lower than the conventional system because of the energy efficiency of the membrane-based dehumidification for dehumidification; it showed 1.55 times energy consumption compared to the conventional system. The system would save 47% of operation energy when the energy performance of the membrane-based dehumidification was improved.
