Abstract
This study conducted a quantitative evaluation via virtual reality and a climate chamber on the effect of construction noise exposure on the productivity of masonry work, which is a labor-intensive activity. This study also analyzed the statistical relationship between psychological and physiological responses and productivity. The mean productivity increased by up to 1.05% at 60 dBA and decreased by up to 2.33% at 100 dBA, depending on the construction noise exposure. Productivity has a negative correlation with the self-perceived effect of construction noise exposure on productivity, which is a psychological response. Moreover, productivity has positive and negative correlations with electrodermal activity and skin temperature, respectively, which are physiological responses. This study proposed the methods to effectively manage productivity from construction noise exposure by using responses that have a statistical relationship with productivity. Nevertheless, it is necessary to consider the health damage of workers due to construction noise exposure when managing productivity.
