신동욱의 시론(詩論) 연구

Abstract

신동욱의 시론은 궁핍했던 외적 여건이 오히려 우리 시사(詩史)의 내용을 풍요롭게 가꾼 역설적 토양이었음을 증언한 논리적 언어이다. 그는 한국 근대시가 때로는 엄혹한 역사를 지켜낸 파수꾼으로, 때로는 인간다운 삶을 지킨 불침번으로, 때로는 미적 자율성을 화두로 내세운 치열한 장인으로서의 역할을 마다하지 않았다고 평가하였다. 그 너비와 지속성에서 소설사나 비평사에 미치지는 못했지만, 그럼에도 신동욱의 내면과 실존을 규율한 큰 수원(水源)은 서정시를 통해 역사와 삶을 모색하는 순간이었을지도 모른다. 그만큼 그는 언제나 내면에 흐르는 어떤 느낌이나 생각을 침잠과 초월의 언어로 표현하였고, 그가 한국 근대시 관련 현상을 다루고 분석한 성과는 모국어에 대한 경험적 공감 과정이었다고 할 수 있다. 그러한 성과는 시론, 시사, 비평 쪽으로 분화하여 현상했지만 결국 그것은 하나의 원류에서 솟아난 ‘서정과 민족’에 대한 믿음의 표출이었다.

Literary criticism by Shin, Dongwook is a logical language proving that impoverished external conditions was a fertile soil for the history of Korean poetry. He assessed that modern Korean poetry did not mind playing the role of a guard preserving harsh history, a night watch depending human life, and a ardent artisan advocating aesthetic autonomy. Though the fountainhead that regulated his inner world and existence did not reach to the history of criticism or novel in width and continuity, it might have been a moment searching for history and life through poems. As much, Shin, Dongwook expressed his feelings and thoughts flowing in his inner world with a language of withdrawal and transcendence. His analysis on phenomenon of modern Korean poetry is also a process of experiential sympathy on native language. Though divided and presented in poetics, poetic history and literary criticism, it was an expression on the belief of ‘lyricism and Korean people’ that spring from a single headwaters.
