타당성, 논리적 형식, 그리고 비대칭성 논제

Abstract

이 논문의 목적은 논증의 타당성(validity) 여부와 논증이 지닌 논리적 형식(logical form) 사이에 정확히 어떤 관계가 있는지를 밝히는 데 있다. 나는 여기서 이른바 ‘비대칭성 논제’(the asymmetry thesis)를 중심으로 이 문제를 다룬다. 비대칭성 논제에 따르면, 논증의 타당성을 입증하는 방식과 논증의 부당성을 입증하는 방식 사이에는 커다란 차이가 있다. 메시는 이런 차이 때문에 반례를 통해서는 논증의 부당성을 입증할 수 없다고 주장하였다. 나는 여기서 그가 말하는 ‘무시무시한’(fearful) 비대칭성은 없으며, 따라서 비대칭성 때문에 논증의 부당성을 입증할 수 없다는 메시의 견해는 과장이라고 주장한다.

In this paper I would like to discuss the exact relationship between validity and logical form, focusing on the so-called asymmetry thesis. According to the asymmetry thesis, there is a remarkable difference between the way of showing validity of arguments and that of showing invalidity. Massey has argued that for this asymmetry we cannot show the invalidity of arguments. I claim here that there is no the alleged fearful asymmetry, so Massey's view is greatly overstated.
