- Abstract
Internet buzzwords, as an important discourse representation reflecting the current social culture, provide a basis for observing the changes of the times, studying the social mentality, and contributing to social governance. The social mentality of the Chinese general public behind the Internet buzzwords of the year 2021-2023 is reflected as follows: the mentality of participation in creation for the enhancement of discourse content, the mentality of suspension anxiety for the reconstruction of verbal emotion, and the mentality of self-identification for the adjustment of linguistic scope. By analyzing the Chinese buzzwords of 2021-2023, we can better understand the value and social mentality factors pursued by the general public in Chinese society in recent years, and provide some new ideas for the future development of China's Internet.
2021-2023 is the year when the New Crown Epidemic affected the overall development of Chinese society, and in the era of the epidemic there was a significant and dramatic increase in the public's online activities, and thus the Internet buzzwords increased dramatically. People's lifestyles also underwent a drastic transformation, and this new lifestyle gave rise to new ideas and vocabularies, so it is necessary to study Internet buzzwords between 2021 and 2023.
This paper investigates the origins and causes of Internet buzzwords. It reveals the social mentality of the Chinese people behind these buzzwords, taking into account the annual lists of the top ten buzzwords by the National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Centre, Biting and Chewing Characters, and Language and Writing Weekly. A large portion of the Chinese buzzwords between 2021 and 2023 reflect the changing mentality of the Chinese people in the current society. Behind the reasons for their generation, they show the netizens' mentality of participation and creation, which makes buzzwords in the field of current affairs become mainstream hotspots through the enhancement of discourse content; they show the youth's mentality of suspended anxiety, which needs to rebuild rhetoric and emotion to evoke a sense of social reality; and they show the public's mentality of self-identification, which reveals the influence of entertainment resources on the production of culture through the adjustment of linguistic scopes.
