예이츠의 재현적 폭력 비판과 문화민족주의의 딜레마

Abstract

For centuries, imperial Britain justified its colonial rule by portraying Ireland as an immature and overly emotional entity. In response to this representational violence, W.B. Yeats sought to reclaim Irish national identity through cultural nationalism. By reappropriating myths, heroes, and religious traditions as distinctly Irish, Yeats aimed to correct the distorted image of the nation produced under colonialism and to establish a renewed national spirit. However, his cultural nationalism was fraught with deep internal conflicts within Irish society. As an artist, Yeats struggled between creative autonomy and nationalist demands; as an Anglo-Irish Protestant, he often found himself at odds with Catholic nationalists and the Irish public. The riots that erupted during the 1907 premiere of The Playboy of the Western World symbolically illustrate these tensions. Ultimately, while Yeats’s cultural nationalism proved an effective weapon against British imperialism and materialism, its edge also turned inward. Caught between Catholic and Protestant factions, Celtic heritage and British influence, Yeats was forced to confront the fundamental dilemmas inherent in a cultural nationalism led by Protestant writers.
