‘K-컬처’에 드러난 혼종적 근대성: 글로벌 한류의 비동시적 문화정치와 그 정경

Abstract

글로벌 한류 현상은 한국의 보편적이고 특수한 근대화 경험이 정치·경제적, 사회·문화적 요인들과 복합적으로 접합되어 형성된 것이며, 이러한 요소들을 총체적으로 살펴볼 때 문화 현상에 대한 보다 깊이 있고 엄정한 논의가 가능해진다. 이에 따라, 이 논문은 글로벌 한류 문화의 문화정치가 한국의 압축적 근대화그리고 문화적 혼종성과 깊은 연관을 맺고 있다고 보고 이를 절합해 ‘혼종적 근대성’으로 개념화하여 살펴보았다. 이때 혼종적 근대성은 한국의 압축적 근대화속 비동시성의 동시성과 그 모순이 한국 사회와 구성원의 역사적·현재적 경험과 일상, 정동과 상호작용하며 나타나는 문화적 양태의 복잡하고 역동적인 공존과 혼합, 변용 등을 설명하는 개념이다. 혼종적 근대성의 관점으로 글로벌 한류의 문화정치 정경을 보면, 세계적 인기를 얻고 있는 K-Pop과 아이돌 시스템은이윤이라는 목적에 최대한 부합하는 인력들을 능력과 노력의 추구, 선함과 진정성의 강조라는 수단을 이용해 효과적으로 관리하는 방식을 보여준다. 그리고 이는 한국 근대화 과정을 추동한 기본 원리(경쟁과 노력)에 정당성을 부여하고 있다. 또한 최근 전 세계적으로 성취를 인정받는 사회비판적 K-콘텐츠는 한국의압축적 근대화 과정에서 생겨난 부조리에 민감하게 반응하고 있지만, 그 비판의 지점이 사회구조의 근본적 변화를 추동하는 수준까지 나아가지 못하는 ‘정서적정의’에 그치고 있다. 이에 더해, 신자유주의적 정치경제 조건 속에 포섭되어 구조적 모순에 대한 알리바이를 제공하는 모습도 보이고 있다. 이처럼 한국의 혼종적 근대성 속에는 다양하고 복잡한 근대의 여러 시간들이 공존하고 충돌했던경험이 양가적이고 복합적인 형태로 반영되어 있다. 그러므로 전 세계 대중들에게 한국의 혼종적 근대성은 자신의 현실과 욕망 그리고 모순들을 비추어 펼쳐볼수 있는 입체적 거울과 같다. 이런 상황에서 앞으로 K-컬처가 세계 근대성에 기여하는 창조적이고 비판적인 상상력을 제공하기 위해서는 지금까지 거대한 부조리를 낳은 서구 국가들의 길을 넘어 다른 근대성의 가능성을 상상하는 여정에 나서야 할 것이다

The global Hallyu phenomenon is shaped by the intersection of Korea’s universal and particular modernization experience with political, economic, social, and cultural factors, and a holistic look at these factors allows for a deeper and more rigorous discussion of the cultural phenomenon. Accordingly, this essay considers the cultural politics of global Hallyu culture to be deeply connected to Korea’s compressed modernization and cultural hybridity, and conceptualizes them as ‘hybrid modernity’. Hybrid modernity is a concept that explains the highly complex and dynamic coexistence, blending, and transformation of cultural forms as they interact with the non-simultaneity and contradictions of Korea’s compressed modernization and the historical and everyday experiences, lives, and emotions of Korean society and its members. Looking at the cultural and political landscape of the global Korean Wave through the lens of hybrid modernity, the globally popular K-Pop and idol systems demonstrate how to effectively manage the workforce to best serve the purpose of profit through the means of competence, hard work, and the emphasis on goodness and authenticity. This lends legitimacy to the basic principles (competition and hard work) that have driven Korea’s modernization process. In addition, the socially critical K-content that has recently been recognized globally for its achievements is sensitive to the structural contradictions created by Korea’s compressed modernization process, but its points of criticism do not go so far as to call for fundamental changes in the social structure. Furthermore, they are subsumed within the neoliberal political and economic conditions, providing an alibi for the structural contradictions. Thus, Korea’s hybrid modernity reflects the ambivalent and complex experience of the coexistence and collision of various times of modernity. Therefore, for the global public, Korea’s hybrid modernity is like a three-dimensional mirror in which they can reflect their realities, desires, and contradictions. Under these circumstances, for K-culture to provide a creative and critical imagination that contributes to global modernity, it will be necessary to embark on a journey to imagine other possibilities of modernity beyond the path of Western countries that have so far produced enormous absurdities.
