여성 가족사 소설에 나타난 낙인과 환대의 의미－최은영의 밝은 밤을 중심으로－

Abstract

이 글은 여성 가족사 소설인 최은영의 『밝은 밤』에 나타난 여성 인물들의 수직적 관계와 수평적 관계에서 형성된 여성들의 사회적 정체성의 의미를 분석한 것이다. 수직적 관계는 세대마다 차별화된 낙인(stigma)과 이에 대응하는 양상, 세대 간에 나타난 갈등과 화해의 과정을, 수평적 관계에서는 각 세대의 여성 주체를 존엄하게 해주는 동성의 환대와 우정을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 2020년대에 연이어 발표된 여성 작가들의 장편 중에서 『밝은 밤』은 모계 가족 서사가 지닌 문학적 특징을 보여준 작품이라 할 수 있다. 여성 가족사 소설의 계보를 잇고 있는 이 작품에서 세대마다 안고 있는 스티그마(낙인)의 양상은 사회적 맥락을 반영하여 다르게 나타난다. 1대의 백정 신분, 2대의 중혼 피해자, 3대의 혼외자, 4대의 이혼 등은 세대 간에 영향을 주면서 시대적ㆍ역사적 상황에 따라 낙인의 강도가 다르고, 대응하는 양상도 다르게 나타남을 알 수 있다. 낙인을 지닌 세대별 여성주체들은 엄마-딸의 관계에서 발생한 불화를 해소하지 못한 채, 각자 안고 있는 슬픔의 밀도를 혼자 인내하며, 단절된 삶을 살아간다. 4대 모두 물리적 시간의 변화 속에서 여전히 가부장제 남성 중심 문화에서 배제되거나 존중받지 못하는 공통된 삶 속에 놓여 있다. 이것이 이 작품의 골격을 이루는 수직적인 모계 가족의 현상이다. 수평적 관계에서 이들의 삶을 살펴보면, 낙인과 세대 간의 불화 때문에 개인의 정체성이 균열을 겪게 되는 시점에서 그래도 이들에게 살아갈 수 있는 힘을 준 것은 동성의 환대와 우정이라 할 수 있다. 무조건적 환대는 타자와의 윤리적 관계와 공동체의 윤리 형성에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 각 세대의 여성주체들이 낙인자로서 위축된 삶이나 침묵에서 벗어나 사회 성원권을 지닌 사회적 정체성을 지니도록 이끈 것이다. 1대 삼천이와 새비, 2대 영옥과 명숙 할머니, 3대 미선과 명희 언니, 4대 지연과 영옥 할머니의 관계에서 무조건적인 환대나 우정을 발견할 수 있다. 더 나아가 환대는 그 영역을 확장하여 이상적인 돌봄공동체의 모습으로 구현되고 있다. 밝은 밤은 거대 담론의 역사적 조류에서 낮은 곳에 위치한 여성주체의 유리된 삶이 어떻게 사회 구성원으로, 즉 성원권을 얻으며 살아갈 수 있는지를 보여주고 있다.

This article analyzes the meaning of women's social identity formed through the vertical and horizontal relationships of the female characters in Choi Eun-young's “Bright Night”, a novel about women's family history . Vertical relationships are examined by focusing on the differentiated stigmas of each generation, the corresponding patterns, and the processes of conflict and reconciliation that emerge between generations. Horizontal relationships, on the other hand, focus on the hospitality and friendship of same-sex partners that dignify the female subjects of each generation. Among the long novels published by female authors in the 2020s, “Bright Night” exemplifies the literary characteristics of matriarchal family narratives. In this work, which continues the lineage of women's family history novels, the stigmas borne by each generation are expressed differently, reflecting the social context. The first generation's status as a butcher, the second as a victim of bigamy, the third as an illegitimate child , and the fourth as a divorced woman influence each generation, revealing that the intensity of the stigma and the way in which each responds to it differ depending on the historical and temporal context. Unable to resolve the discord arising from the mother - daughter relationship, the stigmatized female subjects of each generation endure the depth of their grief alone, living isolated lives. All four generations, despite the passage of time, remain trapped in a shared existence, excluded or disrespected by a patriarchal, male-centered culture. This is the phenomenon of the vertical matriarchal family that forms the framework of this work. Examining their lives from a horizontal perspective , we see that it was same-sex hospitality and friendship that gave them the strength to survive at a time when their individual identities were fractured by stigma and intergenerational discord. Unconditional hospitality plays a crucial role in shaping ethical relationships with others and the ethics of the community. It led each generation of women to break free from the stigmatized lives or silence and to acquire a social identity with the right to participate in society. Unconditional hospitality and friendship can be found in the relationships between Samcheoni and Saebi (generation 1), Yeong-ok and Grandma Myeong-suk (generation 2), Mi-seon and Unnie Myeong-hee (generation 3), and Ji-yeon and Grandma Yeong-ok (generation 4). Furthermore, hospitality expands its scope and is embodied in the form of an ideal caregiving community. “Bright Night” shows how the isolated lives of women, positioned low in the historical currents of grand discourse, can live as members of society, that is, with the right to participate.
