Abstract
Exercise is recommended as an economical and effective intervention for older people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). However, the effects of exercise intervention for improving depression symptoms in patients with MCI remain controversial. This study aimed to examine the effects of exercise on depression symptoms in older people with MCI. We conducted a search for Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of exercise on depression with non-exercise interventions in participants aged over 60 years with MCI. The search was performed across 10 related multiple databases at home and abroad and the ClinicalTrials.gov platform up to February 2024. Fourteen RCTs were included in this review. Meta-analysis results indicated a small positive effect of exercise on measures of depression (SMD = -0.47, CI: -0.73 to -0.21), with mind-body exercise being more effective than other types of exercise in improving depressive symptoms in elderly individuals with MCI (SMD= -0.40 95% CI: -0.69 to -0.10). Furthermore, exercise interventions conducted three times a week for 40 minutes each session over a 24-week period were found to be relatively more effective in alleviating depression in MCI patients. Based on these conclusions, exercise professionals and physicians should tailor exercise plans to the individual circumstances of each patient to optimally improve depressive symptoms in elderly individuals with MCI.
