글로벌 미디어 기업이 전유하는 K-콘텐츠의 문화적 혼종성과 재현의 문화정치 : 글로벌 K-콘텐츠에 대한 비판적 분석을 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 K-콘텐츠에 드러나는 문화적 혼종성의 재현 방식을 탐구하고 이에 내재된 문화정치적 함의를 비판적으로 고찰하고자 하였다. 구체적으로 글로벌 미디어 기업이 생산한 콘텐츠가 한국을 비롯한 지역의 서사, 정서, 역사성 등을 할리우드식 장르, 미학, 이야기 구조와 어떻게 접합해 재현하는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 특히, 이 과정에서 강화된 문화제국주의 및 신자유주의적 특성을 포착하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 이 글은 스튜어트 홀의 ‘문화의 회로(circuit of culture)’ 모형을 활용해 이와 연관된 국면들을 총체적으로 살펴보고, 글로벌 미디어 기업이 제작한 다섯 편의 드라마 텍스트를 선정해 분석하였다. 이를 통해, 서사 구조, 정동의 구성, 생산, 유통 및 전유의 양상을 유기적이면서 깊이 있게 탐문하고자 하였다. 이 작품들은 한국 근현대사의 폭력과 같은 지역 및 역사적 특수성을 효(孝), 가족주의, 탈권위적 남성성 등의 요소와 결합해 혼종적으로 재현하고 있었다. 이때, 문화적 혼종성은 주변부의 공적 기억과 상흔, 역사적 폭력 등을 재조명하고 새로운 감수성과 공감을 창출하는 잠재력을 지님을 확인할 수 있었다. 동시에 작품들이 차용하는 영웅서사와의 연계는 신자유주의적 주체를 호명하고 구조적•사회적 불평등과 제도적 책임을 개인의 문제로 환원하는 일종의 통치 장치로 기능하고 있었다. 또한, 현지화 과정에서 ‘한국성’을 강조하는 재현의 문화정치는 한국만의 차별화된 문화와 정체성을 상징하는 기호로 적극적으로 활용되면서 표면적으로 문화 다양성을 확장하는 동시에, 글로벌 종속 구조를 심화시키는 복합적 효과를 산출하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

This essay critically examines the cultural and political implications embedded in the modes of representing cultural hybridity in K-Content. It examines how global media corporations articulate Korean and other regional contexts with Hollywood-style genres, aesthetics, and narrative structures. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which this process reinforces patterns of cultural imperialism and neoliberal logics. We adopts Stuart Hall’s the circuit of culture model to analyze multiple moments of cultures through the analysis of five drama texts produced by global media corporations. We found that these works represent local and historical particularities by combining them with elements such as filial piety, familism, and de-authorized forms of masculinity. While hybridity can illuminate peripheral public memory and historical violence, generating new sensibilities and empathy, its articulation through heroic narratives operates as a governing apparatus that hails the neoliberal subject and displaces structural and institutional accountability. During the localization process, it is noted that the representation of “Koreanness” is actively mobilized as a signifer of Korea’s unique cultural identity. This strategy contributes to the expansion of cultural diversity at the level of representation, yet simultaneously deepens global structures of dependency.
