게임의 첫인상이 인기도에 미치는 영향:인디 게임의 이미지적 특성을 중심으로

Abstract

최근 대형 게임 제작사에서 막대한 자본을 투자해 만든 AAA (Triple-A) 게임이 선도하던 게임 산업이 변화를 맞으면 서 인디 게임은 빠른 성장세를 보이고 있다. 개성이 높은 플레이를 제공하는 인디 게임의 특성에 이끌려 게임을 선택한 이후 게임의 지속적인 접근을 유도하기 위해서는 초반 진입 경험이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 인디 게임이 기존에 존재하 지 않은 새로운 경험을 제공한다는 특성을 이해해, Steam 플랫폼 게임 다운로드 화면에서 마주할 수 있는 다양한 이미지 적 특징(게임 플레이 스크린샷과 게임 캐릭터에서 얻을 수 있는 시각적 정보)을 토대로 초반 진입 경험을 설명하고, 게임 의 인기도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하고자 다중 회귀 분석을 실시했다. 이에 게임 캐릭터의 유형(사람, 사물, 동물), 캐릭터 성별, 게임 장르에 따라 각기 다른 인터페이스적 특징을 가진 인디 게임을 제작해야 게임 플레이어들이 선호하는 지에 관한 인사이트를 얻을 수 있었다. 본 연구는 인디 게임의 이미지 분석이 게임 성공에 있어 중요한 요인임을 시사하 며, 효과적인 이미지 구성 전략을 제안한다.

As the game industry undergoes a shift from dominance by AAA (Triple-A) games―produced by major studios with substantial capital investments―to a more diverse landscape, indie games have been experiencing rapid growth. Given that indie games attract players with their distinctive gameplay experiences, ensuring a compelling initial engagement is crucial for fostering continued player involvement. This study examines the unique experiential characteristics of indie games and explores how various visual elements presented on the Steam platform’s game download pages―such as gameplay screenshots and character visuals―shape players’ initial entry experiences. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess how these visual elements influence game popularity. The findings suggest that different interface designs, tailored to character type (human, object, or animal), character gender, and game genre, play a significant role in shaping player preferences. This study highlights the critical role of image analysis in the success of indie games and offers strategic insights into effective visual presentation for game developers.
