Abstract
In this study, the low velocity impact test of glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic (GFRP) composites was simulated and compared with the experimental result by using commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software LS-DYNA. The mechanical properties of GFRP were obtained experimentally based on ASTM standard including the double cantilever beam (DCB) test for modeling of delamination between composite layers using cohesive zone model (CZM). The all of tests were simulated and analyzed using FEA and their results were compared experimental results. Based on these results, the low velocity impact simulation of GFRP was performed using 2D shell element and CZM. Finally, it was found that the impact behavior, failure load and also the delamination between each layers of GFRP could be predict-ed accurately by using the simulation technique devised in this study. It is expected that the simulation technique ap-plied in this work can be widely used for design of various GFRP structures.
