Proinflammatory cytokine and nitric oxide production by human macrophage stimulated with Trichomonas vaginalis

Abstract

Trichomonas vaginalis recruits various inflammatory cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, around tghe site of inflammation. Macrophages play an important role in human immune system protecting against microorganism. In this study, we investigated whether human macrophages may be involved in inflammation induced by T. vaginalis. Human monocyte-derived macrophages(HMDM) were cocultured with T. vaginalis(T016 isolate). Live, opsonized-live trichomonads, and T. vaginalis lysates increased proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6 by HMDM, measured by ELISA and/or RT-PCR.

In conclusion, it is suggested that human monocyte-derived macrophages are involved in T. vaginalis-induced inflammation via proinflammatory cytokine and NO production. Also, the TNF-alpha production might be regulated by NO.
