Abstract
In this study, it is found that the cultural identity of commercial alley is based on the history of alley, and it can be created only when the trace of time is preserved well with newly created function and character during the commercial renovation. In particular, it is confirmed that cultural identity is a sustainable value represented by history, density, preservation, and openness in a unique alleyway that can accommodate various traces of life and new demands for the times. Thus, the discovery of the historical value of buildings in the alley and proper preservation are important for commercial alley activation. Lastly, I hope that this study will be useful as basic data for establishing the cultural identity of alleys and the spatial planning for formation of differentiating value in the future research.
