- Abstract
- This case analysis explored and analyzed the use state of empty space in subway stations to understand potential value of empty space, and understand elements to consider for effective use of underground space. Case study was focused on the six locations of Seoul Metro and analyzed collected materials on three aspects and their mutual relationships: accessibility, utilization, and regional characteristics. First, accessibility is the convenience of access to the facility or function in the utilized space. Case study showed that it is advantageous when the facility is located close to ticket gate, and when it is on the identical route of subway users’ move. Second, utilization is the frequency of use and it showed strongly in all cases since people are receptive to newly offered service as well as to improvement of the environment. Lastly, regional characteristics is about how much the facility reflects the unique character of area where the station is located. The finding of this study is that empty spaces in subway stations is valuable public goods and potential source of improvement of urban environment. There are important elements to be considered in space planning to efficiently manage the public asset and maximize the users’ benefit.
