- Abstract
- In modern times, where modern architecture cannot be interpreted in a standardized way, consideration of harmonyand context with the surroundings is considered one of the most important focus points. Therefore, this paper arose from thequestioning of the contextual characteristics shown in the architecture of David Chipperfield. Furthermore, through the analysis ofthe characteristics of contextual architecture, it was understood that visual and non-visual elements exist and are expressedthrough harmony with the surrounding environment, interaction between people and architectural space, and surfacecommunication through a facade. Moreover, a prior study of contextual architecture identified that many modern architects havebeen influenced by contextualism and that they are performing contextual architecture in their architectural worlds with variouskeywords such as continuity, placeness, and historicality. Based on this, among the various characteristics that appear inChipperfield’s architecture, the elements of contextual architecture were categorized into Dense Minimalism, consideration of thelocal situation and response to the context, placeness, and historicality, and these features could similarly be found in DavidChipperfield’s architecture. Furthermore, based on Chipperfield’s main works, an analysis was conducted on the understandingof the local context, the history and interpretation of the place, the method of space organization through composition andcollection, and materials that reflect the placeness. If the original David Chipperfield papers were focused on the analysis of hisminimalistic expression methods and exterior expression techniques, we aim to research on his architectural approach—how hetook into consideration the surrounding context, how he organized the space for harmony, and how he selected the materials—and investigate the contextual characteristics that appear in his architecture by analyzing his major works.
