Abstract
This paper is an analysis of the mysterious stories about the ‘old trees’ that appeared in Korea of colonial period. The ghost stories of the old trees were rare in Japan at that time, but they are often seen in Korea where modernization has come. These are unique ghost stories that are closely linked to the cultural and social forms of colonial space. Comparing the ghost stories about ‘old tree’ in Japanese and Korean newspapers and magazines, you can see entertainment and their politics by preference and purpose of each medium. A ghost story has the characteristic that the boundary between real story and fiction is ambiguous. Especially the newspaper “Gyeongseong ilbo” of Governor General of Japan issued a story about the Anchong dong ginkgo tree using this characteristic. This ginkgo story told the reader a terrible ghost story while mixing the fiction of child's death. There was a political intention of the newspaper, but along with that there were ethnic cultural conflicts about the faith of old trees. It turned out that ghost stories about old colonial Korea in Korea functioned as a new story in progress rather than an old story.
