- Abstract
- Acoustic and modal analyses of the honeycomb sandwich panels for mitigating the environmental noise are performed for different panel configurations. By controlling the material properties and cellular structure of honeycomb sandwich panels, it may be possible to tune their sound transmission characteristics. The effect of the honeycomb structure on the sound transmission and vibration properties is numerically investigated. Different types of panels show widely different modal properties as well as sound transmission characteristics. Compared with uniform, homogeneous plate, honeycomb sandwich panels show more complex resonant responses, and these resonances significantly affect the sound transmission loss characteristics. Two types of resonant modes are identified. The first is the usual bending modes that extend over the whole specimen, which can be regarded as the global bending modes. There is also a second type of resonant modes at higher frequency that primarily depend on detailed honeycomb core structure, which can be called the local bending modes. It is found that both the global and the local modes significantly affect the sound transmission at the corresponding frequency range.
