- Abstract
- Unlike ordinary museums which are theme-oriented, children's museums show propensity to focus on visitors.
For children who are major target visitors, rather than the term 'visitation', the form of hands-on experience is preferred and children's museums have developmental characteristics of requiring children's admittance escorted by their parents as a must. Furthermore, children's museums are expected to have their own distinctive exhibitions and operations. Especially previous studies confirmed that mutual interaction between children and accompanying parents turned out to be major factor which heightens the viewing effect and visitors' satisfaction and so spatial installations to promote or support this result at the planning stage of children's museum have to be considered. This viewpoint was kept in mind during this research. After this research, it was confirmed that children's visitation escorted by parents plays an important role in understanding the content of the exhibition and heightening their satisfaction and, further, accompanied visitation in accordance with exhibition type has its own characteristic. In addition to that, it was due to spatial layout and design of exhibits which were tailored to specific experiences. This study is of significance in that it, by supporting qualitative mutual interaction between children and their escorting parents and heightening their satisfaction, provides suggestions on planning at children's museums.
