- Abstract
- This study examines the factors influencing 20 year olds’ preference for old LP records. We use grounded theory to gain insight into the experiences of 20-something record collectors through interviews with 8 individuals and use this data to propose a model of their collecting experiences. The model is composed of four key elements: 1) collectors’ dissatisfaction with the unilateral and passive role of the consumer in current popular culture; 2) the distinctive personalities of collectors; 3) the sense of fulfillment collectors get from amassing the information needed to collect records; and 4) the process of becoming an active and enhanced collector/consumer. This study presents an in-depth exploration of this phenomenon and seeks to understand the retro allure yesterday’s commercial audio technology holds for younger generations.
