Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study is to review the ergonomic literature on the forestry, and to suggest directions for further research. Background: Although Korea's proportion of forest to total area of country ranks the 4th place in the world, the level of interest in forestry is very low nationwide. Method: The peer-reviewed articles from international and domestic academic journals published after year 2000 were searched using Web of Science, Google Scholar, DBPia and KISS. The literature was retrieved using the keywords of 'forest', 'forestry', 'ergonomic', 'musculoskeletal', 'health', 'injury' and their combinations. Results: Total 38 international articles were analyzed. They could be classified into the biomechanical/physiological studies (11 articles, 28.9%), cross-sectional studies on the musculoskeletal symptoms (6 articles, 15.8%), quantitative studies on posture (6 articles, 15.8%), studies on human performance (5 articles, 13.2%), studies on system analysis (5 articles, 13.2%), literature review (2 articles, 5.2%), and others (3 articles, 7.9%). Only 3 domestic articles that used OWAS were found. Conclusion: It could be known that ergonomic problems in forestry are prevalent and serious. Additional studies are needed in various fields of forest ergonomics, especially in developing engineering and administrative controls. Application: The results could be applied to guide the direction of further ergonomic research to enhance the welfare of the workers in forestry industry.
